Bicyclic carbinol of formula <IMAGE> (I) or 1,2,3,4,4a,5,8,8a-octahydro-2,2,6,8-tetramethyl-1-naphthalenol possesses useful odorous properties and it can be used advantageously as perfuming ingredient. A two-step process for its synthesis is disclosed starting from 2-methylpenta-1,3-diene and 6,6-dimethyl-cyclohex-2-en-1-one.
