Process for the preparation of L-isoleucine

A process for the preparation of L-isoleucine comprises an enzymatic reaction of alpha -aminobutyric acid or alpha -ketobutyric acid in an aqueous medium which contains at least ethanol in the presence of cells of a biotin-dependent strain of the genus Brevibacterium in order to prepare L-isoleucine in the aqueous medium and to isolate L-isoleucine from the aqueous medium. This process can be used to prepare L-isoleucine in high yield.
