PURPOSE:To obtain the titled display element rich in coloring hue and rapid in coloring response, by encapsulating a solution containing a specific benzooxazole derivative and supporting electrolyte in a cell. CONSTITUTION:The aimed display element obtained by dissolving (B) 1-100pts. wt. (preferably 2-20pts.wt.) one or more kind of benzooxazole expressed by formula I (R1 and R2 are H, 1-4C alkyl, methoxy, ethoxy, or nitro; A is formulas II-VI) and (C) 10-200pts.wt. (preferably 50-100pts.wt.) supporting electrolyte such as tetrabutylammonium tosylate or sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate in (A) 1,000pts.wt. polar solvent such as water or dimethylformamide and encapsulating the resultant solution in a cell.
