PURPOSE:To enable rapid detection of abnormality, by a method wherein a seat ring is mounted to the outside of a staffing box, a driven ring is moved in the direction of an rotary axis toward the seal fluid side from the open air side by means of a spring force and a seal fluid pressure, and a seat ring is pressed. CONSTITUTION:In a state in which a given compression volume is exerted on a spring 11, two major ring lips 18 are mounted to the outside of a stopper 6 and a driven ring 7, which are engaged with a rotary shaft 3. A seat ring 5 is mounted to the rear end surface of a stuffing box 1 by means of a grand cover 2. The front end surface of a joint 9 is joined with the seat ring 5, the stopper 6 is secured on a rotary shaft 3, and the driven ring 7 and further the joint 9 are pressed against the seat ring 5 through the energizing force of a spring 11 and by means of a seal fluid pressure sealed by an O-ring 15. In this way, a mechanical seal is mounted to the outside of the stuffing box, detection of abnormality is effected rapidly, and sealing can be excellently maintained without corroding a spring by means of internal fluid.
