PURPOSE:To turn a work 90 deg. with a simple turning mechanism by pivot- mounting a base body of a holding means freely rotatably about a pivot shaft attached to a bracket extending from an index table, with the rotary axis of the index table orthogonally intersecting the pivot axis of the holding means. CONSTITUTION:In the case a work 4 is held in an upright condition, its end surface 4a is machined, and the periphery 4b which is diplaced 90 deg. from the end surface 4a is to be machined, the work 4 is turned as described below. An engage-stop pin 26 fixing a base body 10 in a horizontal position is drawn out of a positioning hole 32, a swing arm 25 is turned and the pin 26 is made to engage with a positioning hole 33. As a result, the base body 10 is positioned and fixed and the work 4 is turned 90 deg. as shown with imaginary lines. While the peripheral surface 4b is displaced to a machinable position with a single axis, since the pivot shaft 9, 9a intersects orthogonally the axis S2, S1 of the rotary shaft of an index table 3, the center of the work 4 precisely agrees with the axis S1 and therefore the index work is not inconvenienced.
