A yarn having improved characteristics is obtained by a polymer solution being prepared, the solution being formed into a bundle of filaments above the dissolution temperature of the polymer, the filaments being cooled to below the dissolution temperature, causing gelling to occur, the filaments being stretched while the solvent is removed, followed by a compressive force being exerted on the filaments, perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the filaments, so that the ratio between the width and the thickness of the filaments increases. The yarn can be processed into very strong composite structures and compact antiballistic structures.
