PURPOSE:To constitute the a converter in such a manner that the converter satisfies the following requirements as a short wavelength light source for a high recording density optical disk device; more than required output (2mW) be obtd.; the light intensity distribution at the exit end be single peak; the spot diameter at the exit end be small and the wavelength be a blue region. CONSTITUTION:A waveguide layer 2 having a ridge type channel part 2a is provided on a substrate 1. The film thickness tr of this channel part 2a is set larger than the film thickness t0 of the slab waveguide layer 42 at the time of the phase matching of the zero order mode basic wave and zero order mode second harmonic wave of the wavelength converter having the slab waveguide layer structure constituted by adopting the same materials as the materials of the substrate 1, the waveguide layer 2 having the channel part 2a and a clad layer for the respective materials of the substrate 1, the slab waveguide layer 42 and the clad layer. In addition, the film thickness tf in the thin parts 2b on both sides of the channel part 2a is set smaller than the film thickness t0. |
