The appts. has a drive unit (1) is coupled by an input shaft (2) to a gearbox (9). An output shaft (3) and control shaft (4) are braked by hydraulic pumps (8) in respective closed circuits (7,6) with vol. control valves (5a, 5b). These are operated by an electronic controller (11) responsive to signals from tachometers (10) on the three shafts (2-4) and sensors of positions of a brake pedal (12), an accelerator pedal (13) and a gear ratio selector (14) according to a preselected program. ADVANTAGE - Any desired rotational speed from zero to max. is attainable under load at optimal gear ratio without recourse to clutch.
