The polyester copolymer having repeating units of formulae (I) and (II) randomly in the main chain is obtained by (1) adding 1,4- cyclohexanedimethanol and terephthalic acid in the termination stage of esterification of polyethylene terephthalate oligomer, (2) esterifying 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol and terephthalic acid at 240- 270 deg.C for 1-3 hrs, and (3) polycondensing the reactant (2) in the presence of polycondensation catalyst (e.g. antimony, cobalt or phosphorus compound) at 280-295 deg.C for 1.5-2.5 hrs. The copolymer has a high viscosity and low melting point, and is useful for sheet, film of molding material.
