Cover made from elastically deformable plastic, which is to be placed on a container. The cover has a circumferential sleeve which extends downwards and has an internal, annular snap-action rib for engaging on a flange on the circumference of the container which is to be closed. The circumferential sleeve is located at a radial distance outside the container and adjoins an edge section of the lid at an acute angle. The vertical distance between the edge of the opening of the container and the underside of the flange is greater than the vertical distance between the sealing line of the cover and the top side of the snap-action rib with the lid removed and the stress thereon relieved. On the inside of the circumferential sleeve, there is an annular recess which widens conically outwards to a thin, elastic part of the circumferential sleeve located directly above the snap-action rib. Next to the snap-action rib, the circumferential sleeve merges into an annular grip which forms a bistable snap-action clamp and can be displaced out of a position in which it extends downwards and the flange is virtually parallel to the container wall, into a position in which it extends upwards and the snap- action rib at least bears against the flange with a reduced pressure or is free from the flange.
