PURPOSE:To provide the focus detection device which is provided with plural focus detection areas in its photographic picture plane and securely acquires a subject that a photographer intends over a wide range in the picture plane and detects the focus in a short time. CONSTITUTION:A selection area 206 including plural focus detection areas 201a and 201b among >=2 focus detection areas 201a-201c... set in the photographic picture plane and a nonselection area 207 including at least one focus detection area 201c are set, and focus detection is performed for the focus detection areas 201a and 201b in the selection area 206 by processing the outputs of photoelectric converting means 203 and 204. Consequently, the focus detection is performed over the wide range in the photographic picture plane, the intended subject can securely be acquired, and even if the number of the focus detection areas is large, the focus detection processing is performed only for the focus detection areas in the selection area, so the focus detection time is shortened. |
