The workpieces (1) are delivered by conveyor (4) periodically to an assembly station (3) equipped with a programmable robot (2). Incomplete or erroneous assembly is rectified manually at an aftertreatment station (6). Within the range of the robot but outside the normal assembly space, a training workpiece (7) is kept in a fixed position to which a faulty robot can be moved. This enables the work flow to be maintained and work carried out at the aftertreatment station while the robot is repaired and checked with the aid of the training workpiece.
