PURPOSE:To provide the optical function element which is simple in constitution and functions as a waveguide type optical switch, optical modulator and higher harmonic generator having less dependency on wavelengths. CONSTITUTION:This optical function element has an optical waveguide 3 produced by using a process for production of the optical waveguide to increase only the extraordinary light refractive index ne of a crystal on a substrate 1 consisting of a + or -Z plate of LiNbO3, a + or -Z plate of LiTaO3 or LiTaxNb1-xO3 formed on the + or -Z plate of the LiNbO3 or LiTaO3 and (a pair of) electrodes 2a, 2b which apply an electric field perpendicularly to this optical waveguide 3 and parallel with the plane direction thereof. The guided light (for example, TM mode) of the optical waveguide 3 is radiated into the substrate by applying a voltage between the electrodes 2a and 2b. The intensity of the emitted light from the optical waveguide 3 is then modulated by on and off of the voltage. |
