The direction display method finds the forward or the backward tape direction by using a hall sensor (14) which detects the changes of magnetic field when magnets (12) on the rotating disk pass through the sensor (14). The output (Q) of a flip-flop (18) is connected to an integrator (24) whose output feeds into the VCO (22) and a comparator (26). The comparator (26) decides the direction of the cassette tape running.
