Method of reducing the coefficients of static friction and sliding friction and of increasing the resistance to wear and abrasion, and the lifetime, of a body 1 which slides on solid water, in which the surface intended for the sliding of the body 1 is provided with a surface layer 2 of amorphous, diamond-like carbon having a thickness of up to 100 mu m, as a friction coating. The surface layer 2 is applied to the sliding body 1 by means of plasma-activated chemical deposition from the vapour phase, PA-CVD, from an atmosphere of C2H2 or CH4 or a mixture of the abovementioned gases or a hydrocarbon, with or without the addition of H2, under a residual pressure of from 10<-6> to 10<-4> bar. The sliding body 1 is preferably provided, prior to the application of the surface layer 2 and at least in part, with an interlayer 3 having a thickness of from 0.1 to 3 mm and being of comparatively high hardness and/or high wear resistance. Foremost among the possible applications of the coating is its use as a sliding (running) surface of winter sports articles, with the objective of reducing times when racing. <IMAGE>
