The invention relates to a method for compressing a gaseous medium, in which the lubricant contained in the compressed medium and serving to cool and lubricate a liquid-injected compressor is firstly separated and then, by using a pressure gradient set between the separating and injecting parts, is fed again to the compressor and the excess pressure is reduced. In order to minimise the loss which attends the reduction in the excess pressure, it is proposed according to the invention that the excess energy is fed to a machine doing mechanical work.
