The back support (8) has a bottom pivot axis (9), extending in a direction across the vehicle. A support wall (6), pref. forming the rear wall (5) of the back rest (1), is connected to the support via an air pad (7) with variable pressure. With a change of volume in the air pad, the back support is pivoted to alter the tilt of the body contact surface (12) of the back rest. The pivot axis is formed by a hinge-type connection to the support wall. The back support is retained at the top end (10) by an element, e.g. a helical tension spring (11). The cover material (3) outside the body contact area consists of a highly elastic material.
