The transmission (10) has a casing (23) containing a drive shaft (13), an output shaft (19) and at least one intermediate shaft (16). The drive shaft has a worm (14) engaged with a wormwheel (15) on an intermediate shaft. The axis (22) of the drive shaft is between the axis of the output shaft and the axis of the intermediate shaft. Thus, the external circumference region of the wormwheel or endface wheel (18) of the output shaft is always in the lubricant sump for immersion lubrication.
