PURPOSE: To allow a pattern to be converged into an optimum focus accurately and stably even when an image pickup object has any patterns. CONSTITUTION: A degree of a focal state of an input image is measured by image processing, and the focus is adjusted to minimize a focus. In the automatic focus controller as above, a means calculating autocorrelationΦ(x, y) between picture elements apart by plural picture elements relatively is provided in an automatic focus processing circuit 6, and the sum of autocorrelationΦ(x1 , y1 ),Φ(x2 , y2 ),...,Φ(xn , yn ) a one or plural positions is divided by autocorrelationΦ(0, 0) at the origin or autocorrelationΦ(01, 1) of an adjacent picture element on an adjacent scanning line to normalize the sum and the focus is adjusted to minimize the normalized sum.
