A cooling device has: (a) a closed chamber (50) contg. a liq. of atmos. pressure boiling point equal to the desired cooling temp. and having a wall (22) with an exterior surface for contacting an object to be cooled; and (b) an arrangement (60) for instantaneously opening the chamber to the atmos. when cooling is desired. Pref. the liq. is a hydrocarbon (esp. C3H6, C3H8 or C4H10) which is gaseous at atmos. pressure and which has a b.pt. 180-250 K.
