PURPOSE: To enable the down shift control which suits to a driver's liking by comparing a value detected by a driving condition detection means with a predetermined judgement reference value to judge whether down shift is necessary or not and compensating the judgement reference value based on a driving condition when down shift instruction is given manually. CONSTITUTION: A gear change controller 10 is provided with an engine rotation speed sensor 21, a car speed sensor 23, a throttle opening degree sensor 24, a handle angle sensor 26, a select lever position sensor 27, a gear change step switch 28 to detect the running condition of a vehicle and the like. An electronic control unit 11 performs gear change control in accordance with driver's select lever operation in manual gear change mode (sport mode). When gear change control is performed, a judgement reference value which is used for judging whether down shift is necessary or not is compensated when a driver gives an instruction for down shift by select lever operation to apply engine brake so that down shift control which suits to the driver's liking is realized. |
