The preparation of 1,2-dichloroethane from ethylene, hydrogen chloride and oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas can be controlled well if the non-reacted hydrogen chloride is washed out of the reaction mixture with water and the amount of hydrogen chloride in the washing water is determined by measuring a parameter, such as the electrical conductivity, the measured value being used to control the amount of hydrogen chloride used. |
