PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new compound comprising a specific transition metal compound having dihydroazulene skeleton and capable of providing high-molecular weight and high melting polymer capable of carrying out extrusion molding and injection molding in high yield as a catalytic component, etc., forα-olefin polymerization. SOLUTION: This new transition metal compound is represented by formula I [R<1> , R<2> , R<4> and R<5> are each H, a 1-10C hydrocarbon or a 1-18C silicon-containing hydrocarbon; R<3> and R<6> are each a 3-10C bifunctional hydrocarbon, etc., forming a condensed ring toward 5-membered ring to which they are bonded; R<7> and R<8> are each a 1-20C (halogenated) hydrocarbon; (m) and (n) are each 0-20; Q is an alkylene, a silylene or germylene having a 1-20C halogenated hydrocarbon binding two 5-membered rings; X and Y are each H, a halogen, a 1-20C (halogenated) hydrocarbon, etc.; M is IV to VI group transition metal of the periodic table] and useful as a catalytic component, etc., forα-olefin polymerization.
