The press incorporates two pressure plates (4, 5) and a tool (13) consisting of tool halves (13.1, 13.2). It further incorporates a short stroke piston and cylinder unit (7) to advance the pressure plates (4, 5) towards each other and (during hydroforming) to transfer a closure force to the tool, and a return unit to return the unit (7) to its original position. The return unit is an energy storage element. A long stroke cylinder (15) is attached with its ram (14) to the top tool half (13.2), and displaces it to close and open the tool.
