<p>A low pressure vented battery (10) structure comprised of lithium ion polymer cells contained within a flexible container (1). The flexible container is punctured to provide a venting aperture (2). The venting aperture (2) is externally sealingly covered with a vent structure comprising a first chemically inert plastic film layer (21) having a central aperture (21a) which is adhered to the flexible container around the periphery of the central aperture (21a), with the central aperture (21a) being in registration with the venting aperture (2). A second film chemically inert layer membrane (23) is partially adhered to the first layer (21), whereby the membrane (23) is stretched and anchored in a position covering the central aperture (21a) and the venting aperture (2), and partially separated from the first layer (21) to provide a venting pathway from the venting aperture (2) to the ambient atmosphere. The second film layer (23) is releasably sealed to the first layer (21), at the position of partial separation, by a releasable sealing material (22) of sufficient strength to maintain a seal under equalized internal and external pressure conditions and normal handling of the cell or battery (10).</p> |
