The system enables rapid determination of index without reference to lookup table. The system for coding and decoding digital signals includes a procedure for determination of a code vector index (VCk) belonging to a predetermined network. It includes a first stage of determination (E47) of a leader vector (Y, VLk) for the code vector (VCk). The second stage includes looking for a number of permutations (NP) between the code vector and the leader vector. The third stage comprises determination (E51) of the index (Ik) for the code vector as a function of the number of permutations.
