The use of compositions containing at least one metalloproteinase inhibitor, or its functional biological equivalent, to induce or stimulate hair growth and prevent its loss. The metalloproteinase inhibitor may be any of the following: a tissue inhibitor, a chemical inhibitor, a growth factor, a cytokin, an oncogen, or a matrix material. Especially preferred tissue inhibitors are natural or synthetic peptides that may be protected by acylation, acetylation, or amidation, TIMP-1, TIMP-2, TIMP-3, and TIMP-4 (tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases) being especially preferred. These are described in Woessner J.F., Faseb Journal, 1991. Preferred chemical inhibitors are thiols and hydroxamates. The compositions preferably contain 0.01 - 5%, especially 0.05 - 2% by weight of the inhibitor. Other active materials may also be present, such as nicotinic esters, pyrimidine derivatives especially Minoxidil, anti-androgenic agents, 5- alpha -reductase inhibitors, OH radical binders, such as dimethyl sulfoxide, peptides such as the tripeptide Lys-Pro-Val, extracts from micro-organisms, especially from bacteria, and vegetable extracts.
