<p>A valve assembly (10) is operative for automatically shutting off both a water supply line (12) and gas supply line (14) to a gas-fired hot water vessel (16) upon detection of a water leak. The valve assembly (10) is connected in the water supply line (12) and includes a valve body (34), a sliding valve member (36) which is spring biased to a closed position, and a water softenable latch (38) which maintains the valve member (36) in an open position against the bias of a spring (102). Upon exposure to water, the water softenable latch (38) softens and releases the valve member (36) to move from its open position to its closed position to cut off water supply through the valve body (34). During the movement of the valve member (36), a formation (110) thereon engages a contact assembly (112) wired into the electromagnetic gas supply control valve (24). Engagement with the contact assembly (112) disrupts power to an electromagnetic actuator (25) causing the gas valve (24) to be closed.</p> |
