PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound excellent in hydrophilicity by binding amino group in D-gluycosamine which is a constituent saccharide of chitosan to monosaccharides each having carboxyl group. SOLUTION: The amino group in D-glucosamine which is a constituent saccharide of chitosan is bound to monosaccharides each having carboxyl group to thereby afford the objective compound having a recurring unit represented by the formula the bond between the glucoside units isβ(1→4); R denotes NH2.COOH-R' or NHCO-R' [COOH-R' is a monosaccharide having at least one carboxyl group (e.g. D-glucuronic acid) and CO-R' denotes a residue after removing OH from the carboxyl group of the monosaccharide]}. The above compound, e.g. a complex chitosan compound in which the amino group is covalently bound to the carboxyl group of the monosaccharide is obtained by dissolving the chitosan in an aqueous solution of the monosaccharide having the carboxyl group and the adding and reacting a water-soluble condensing agent (e.g. metho-p-toluenesulfonic salt) therewith. |
