PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To align liquid crystals at a prescribed pretilt angle even if the angle in initial period alignment is 0 deg. when the light alignment of a liquid crystal layer is applied to a display system requiring the pretilt angle represented by a twisted nematic type. SOLUTION: This device has a first substrate SUB1 formed with a first alignment layer ORI1, a second substrate SUB2 formed with a second alignment layer ORI2 and the liquid crystal layer LC consisting of a liquid crystal composition held in the opposite spacing of the first substrate SUB1 and the second substrate SUB2. An inclinationθis imparted to a surface in which at least one of the first and second alignment layers ORI1 and ORI2 has a liquid crystal alignment controllability imparted by the irradiation with light polarized to a linear form and at least one surface of the first and second alignment layers ORI1 and ORI2 within the pixels to be displayed, which surface comes into contact with the liquid crystal layer LC in the alignment direction of the liquid crystal molecules constituting the liquid crystal layer LC.
