PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a superconducting wire rod and a manufacturing method thereof capable of attaining a critical current density equal to a superconducting wire rod in a tape-like shape in a cross section even in a superconducting wire rod in an approximately round shape in a cross section. SOLUTION: This superconducting wire rod is one having an appearance in an approximately round shape in a cross section, the superconducting wire rod is composed of an assembly that two or three of segments having a semicircular shape in a cross section or having a fan shape of the central angle of about 120 deg. are spirally assembled at a predetermined pitch in the longitudinal direction wherein the segment is composed of at least one superconducting filament and a metal coat covering the superconducting filament. The manufacturing method is in which n (n=2, 3) of wire in an approximately round shape in a cross section that at least one oxide superconducting filament is covered with a metal are spirally twisted at a predetermined pith, then the twisted wire is machined to shrink its diameter to be a wire rod having an approximately round shape in a cross section.
