The cold fusion of e.g. palladium and gold electrode pairs comprises polarization of the electrodes. An Independent claim is included for an apparatus for implementing the process. Preferred features: The apparatus has a polarizing circuit where the palladium electrode pressure generates impacts between the hydrogen isotopes and the atoms constituting the lattice of the electrode. The energy generated is transformed into the heat required to melt the hydrogen isotopes.
