The walls (6-8) of the cavity inside the axe head (1) for receiving the plane blade (3) are shaped to give the cavity an essentially trapezoidal cross-section that tapers towards the axe head mantle surface (2). Each wedge (12) inserted into the gap between the cavity walls and the blade has a corresponding tapered cross-section.
