PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To cunt the number of stopped vehicles at places over a wide range. SOLUTION: In the vehicle counting method in which, while moving keeping a fixed distance with the shoulder of a road, time sequential image data are successively acquired while focusing the shoulder of the road in the moving, and the number of stopped vehicles on the shoulder of the road is counted on the basis of the acquired time sequential image data this method has a procedure for preparing a long and large image by linking the time sequential image data in the direction of the time base, procedure for counting the number of vehicles by detecting the wheels of vehicles stopped on the shoulder of the road in the long and large image, procedure for determining the half of the number of wheels as a number of vehicles in the long and large image, and procedure for outputting the determined number of vehicles.
