PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical multilayered structure which enables a high- speed response even in a visible light region and can be suitably used for an image display device. SOLUTION: An optical multilayered structure 1 has a configuration where a transparent layer 11 in contact with a transparent substrate 10 composed of a non-metal material (glass), a gap part 12 whose size is variable and enables generation of the interference phenomenon of light, and a second transparent layer 13 on the transparent substrate 10 in this order. When the refractive index of the transparent substrate 10 is defined as nS, the refractive index of the first transparent layer 11 is defined as n1 and the refractive index of the second transparent layer 13 is defined as n2, the relations of nS<n1 and n1>n2 are established. By changing the size of the gap part 12 to 'λ/4 (λis the wavelength of incident light)' and '0', the reflection or transmission quantity of light made incident from the side of the transparent substrate 10 or from the opposite side of the transparent substrate 10 is changed.
