PURPOSE: A receive adaptive antenna array apparatus and method based on tangential gradient is provided to achieve an excellent adaptability and performance under the communication environment with a high mobility and fading. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus comprises an antenna array constituted by at least tow or more antenna elements; RF receivers for receiving signal vectors output from the corresponding antenna arrays; path searching units for receiving outputs from the RF receivers and searching at least two or more paths; demodulators arranged in the numbers corresponding to the number of the searched paths, and which calculate weight vectors from the received signal vectors in accordance with a tangential gradient method, and demodulate the received signal vectors by forming a receive beam in the desired receive signal direction according to the calculated weight vectors; a path coupler for coupling signal vectors output from demodulators; a de-interleaver for de-interleaving the coupled demodulation signals; and a decoder for decoding the de-interleaved signals. The modulator includes an inverse diffusion unit(104), a signal processor(105) and a receive beam forming unit(106).
