PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new compound having a new partly modified cluster halide part, a polymerization catalyst using the same, and to provide a new method for polymerizing anα-olefin. SOLUTION: The polymerization catalyst is characterized by using a modified cluster halide obtained by carrying out a partial reductive elimination of a cluster halide having a composition expressed by (Na2Ti3Cl8)n, (n is 4-106), and the polymerization catalyst comprises this modified cluster and an organoaluminium compound, and the method for polymerizing anα-olefin using the catalyst is provided.
