PURPOSE: To surely end the piston stroke within the required time by connection side control effectively coping with down-shift requiring responsiveness and the other shifting operation, and secure required capacity the moment the piston stroke ends. CONSTITUTION: In this variable speed control device of an automatic transmission, plural friction elements are provided, and at least a first friction element is connected to perform shifting. In the variable speed control device, the control on the connection side is switched between a first case where the progress speed of shifting is controlled mainly depending on the capacity of the connection side itself, and a second case where shifting progresses regardless of the capacity on the connection side itself. In the second case, the control is such that a command pressure for securing the end of the piston stroke within a designated time is taken as a lower limit value, and immediately after shifting is determined, capacity control is conducted (step 101, 101 to 125). |
