PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water absorbent excellent in water absorption rate under pressurization or no pressurization, highly safe for the skin and the like and suitable for medical supplies, and to provide a method for producing the absorbent. SOLUTION: This water absorbent comprises a water absorbent resin powder (A) whose surface is at least partially covered with a coating film comprising an adduct of a polyamine compound (B) and an olefinic double bond-bearing compound (C). The other objective method for producing the water absorbent comprises adding the polyamine and the olefinic double bond-bearing compound (C) to the water absorbent resin powder (A) and making an addition reaction.
