PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide polyoxyalkylene glycol monoalkylamide nonionic and anionic surface active agents having excellent stability with time, compoundability, foaming ability and less stimulation to skin, and to provide a detergent, a viscosity improver, an emulsifier, a dispersing agent, a dissolving agent, a penetrating agent and a wetting agent each containing the same. SOLUTION: The nonionic or anionic surface active agent is represented by the formula: R<1> -CONH-(AO)n -X (1) (R<1> is a 7-24C hydrocarbon group; X is a hydrogen atom or an anionic group; A is one or more 2-5C alkylene groups; and n is one or more integers the average of which is 1.5 to 20) and comprises component having different n values wherein the sum of the components of nmax±1 is not less than 80 wt.%, nmax being an n value of the component of the largest weight %. A detergent, a viscosity improver, an emulsifier, a dispersing agent, a dissolving agent, a penetrating agent and a wetting agent contain the surface active agents.
