ACTIVE CARBON FIBER HAVING MESOPORES AND PRODUCTION THEREOF

PURPOSE: A process of preparing carbon fiber having mesopores containing the steps of dissolving a nickel-containing organic metal compound and pitch in an organic solvent, spinning the remaining pitch after separating the organic solvent and then thermally stabilizing and activating is provided. Thereby, the product has a specific surface area but an increased total pore area of about 60 times or more as compared to active carbon fiber of prior art. CONSTITUTION: About 0.01 to 5 parts by weight of nickel is dissolved in an organic solvent by adding a nickel-containing organic metal compound thereinto, based on the weight ratio of pitch. A pitch having a softening point of 200deg.C is dissolved in the same organic solvent as the above step and then mixed with the above solution. Thereafter, the organic solvent is removed from the mixed solution, the pitch is spun, the pitch fiber is thermally stabilized at 200 to 350deg.C in an air atmosphere and activated at 600 to 1,000deg.C.
