PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium that is possible to record in high density with low error rate and advantageously used for a magnetic computer data recording/reproducing tape suitable for magnetic recording/ reproducing system. SOLUTION: This is a magnetic recording medium having magnetic layer containing ferromagnetic powder and binder on a base, and characterized in that it has projections on the surface with their heights distributed as motioned below: Projection distribution: area A where the number a of projections (20 nm high or higher but 30 nm or less) is 52.5 to 92.5% (A), area B where the number b of projections (30 nm high or higher but 40 nm or less) is 9 to 29% (B), and area C where the number c of projections (40 nm high or higher) is 0 to 18.5% (C). Further, 100×a/(a+b+c)=A, 100×b/(a+b+c)=B, and 100×c/(a+b+c)=C.
