A material with an energy band within a first chosen wavelength region is arranged in a photonic crystal structure in order to create a photon band gap in a second chosen wavelength region. A method for making a material with a low emittance in a chosen wavelength region comprises selecting a material with an energy band within a first chosen wavelength region and arranging the material in a photonic crystal structure in order to create a photon band gap in a second chosen wavelength region. Independent claims are also included for (a) a material made by this method and (b) a radiant heater with a high emittance within a chosen wavelength region and a low emittance in the other wavelength regions, having this material on its radiant surface.
