The present invention is concerned with genetic and metabolic markers and with methods to identify pathogenic or potentially pathogenic strains of E. coli. More particularly, the invention provides nucleotide and amino acid sequences, antibodies, probes, cells, kits and methods concerning genes expressed mostly by pathogenic strains E. coli.
