PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a safe sizing agent for carbon fibers, easily handleable in industrial treatment, having excellent emulsifiability with epoxy compounds and containing an anionic surfactant other than endocrine-disrupting chemicals. SOLUTION: This sizing agent for carbon fibers contains an anionic surfactant having a hydrophobic group selected the group of formulas (1) to (4) (R<SB>1</SB>, R<SB>2</SB>and R<SB>3</SB>are each independently H or a 1-3C chain hydrocarbon group; R<SB>4</SB>is a bivalent aliphatic hydrocarbon group; and (m) is an integer of 1-3).
