<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small-sized, light-weight and bright projection image display device using a reflection type image display element, free from the contrast reduction due to the leaking light during displaying a black image. <P>SOLUTION: A reflection polarizing plate functioning as a polarizing plate by providing a grating function in only the same specific direction is used as a polarizer and an analyzer for the reflection image display element, and the reflection polarizing plates are arranged just before and behind the reflection image display element on the optical path. As for the optical unit for a reflection liquid crystal projector and a reflection liquid crystal projector, by having such a configuration by using the reflection polarizing plate functioning as a polarizing plate having the grating function in only the specific direction, it is unnecessary to install a PBS prism and a 1/4 wavelength plate for correcting the PBS prism. Besides, the interference of structural components for holding a projection lens and a reflection liquid crystal panel is prevented, then, the contrast is enhanced without reducing the resolution, the number of components is reduced (brightness is enhanced) and the device is made small in size and light in weight. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI |
