The appliance has an upper sleeve (48) containing a sliding die (46), and a stationary lower sleeve (50) at a distance to the upper one. The lower sleeve accommodates the shaft of the rivet (10) during the setting process. The lower sleeve is enclosed by a tensioning sleeve (52), which projects over it towards the sliding die, and serves as support for the metal plates (24,26) to be connected by the rivet. The tensioning sleeve has a ring shoulder (54), which is flexibly pre-tensioned against a stop (62), by a spring parcel (60) held between the ring shoulder and an abutment (56). |
