A hydrated gel 12 bearing an electropherogram is sandwiched between transparent permeable membranes 16, 18 having shrink rates compatible with those of the gel sheet and is dried while maintaining the membranes under tension. The electropherogram is thus reduced to a thin film in which state it is more suitable for analysis and storage. The membranes with the gel between them may be clamped between rings 20, 22 and held in tension by resilient rings 32, 34 engaging in grooves in the rings 20, 22. Hot air is then blown on to the assembly. The membranes are preferably of regenerated cellulose and are initially saturated with water.</p> |
