[Also in Division B6] The heat-softened flange at the open end of a thermoplastic plastic container is curled by apparatus including a number of smooth surfaced axially parallel rolls 17 arranged in a circle, and a further roll 18 of larger diameter which is vertically adjustable and has a spiral groove for receiving the flange and for progressively curling it as the container is moved both axially and rotationally. The rolls are rotated by a motor 32 and belt drive 40. A stack of containers C is fed horizontally from a trough 55 through an electrically-heated unit 42 by soft rubber rolls 48 inclined to the axis of the unit and driven from the motor by a belt 53. The flange-receiving end of the groove in the roll 18 is slightly deeper than the remainder, and the receiving ends of the rolls 17 are reduced slightly in diameter to ensure the proper entry of the flange into the groove. The remainder of the groove is of constant depth and some of the convolutions progressively decrease in axial width to curl the flange. Containers leaving the roll 18 pass through a circular opening in a plate 9 and are received on a trough 56. Liquid coolant is circulated through the roll 18. |
