<p>1336703 17α-Ethynylestriols ELI LILLY & CO 23 March 1972 [24 March 1971 (2) 15 April 1971 23 April 1971] 13523/72 Heading C2U The invention comprises (a) the 3-cyclopentyl ether of 17α-ethynylestriol (I); and (b) a process for separating a compound of formula (wherein R<SP>11</SP> is H, C 1-3 alkyl or C 5-6 cycloalkyl) from a mixture thereof with its 17α-hydroxy- 17#-ethynyl isomer, by treating the mixture with acidic acetone to convert the latter component to its 16,17-acetonide which is then removed, e.g. by chromatography or crystallization. The starting mixture may be obtained by ethynylation of a 16α-alkanoyloxy-estrone or a 3-alkyl ether, 3-cycloalkyl ether or 3-alkanoate thereof. When R<SP>11</SP> is H in the separated compound II, it may be etherified in the 3-position by reaction with an alkali metal alkoxide or thallous ethoxide and reaction of the resulting salt with a C 5-6 cycloalkyl halide. Compound I is said to be estrogenic, and may be made up with carriers into pharmaceutical compositions for oral and parenteral administration.
